A man standing in front of a bright green background. He's wearing a dark gray button up shirt and he's smiling. When James first arrived from Haiti he felt lost. He couldn’t understand people, and he had no one to turn to for advice. Coming to The Immigrant Learning Center changed all that.

“This school [brings] you hope,” James says. “You come here, you learn English, you know how to deal with everything… and also you feel inclusion… so you’ll feel comfortable in the society.”

Teachers at The ILC helped him to improve his English but also taught job search skills like writing an American resume and practicing for interviews. This all gave James the tools and confidence to leave a low-paying job with a commute out to Milton and look for something better. He now has a job as an overnight shift leader at a nearby Walgreens, which he says is “perfect.” He tells us now that the job search feels “easy.”

Although he is happy with his new job, James is not done learning. He works five days a week at Walgreens, three days a week at Whole Foods and comes to class at The ILC five days a week. His English continues to improve, as does his understanding of his new country. From the political system to the financial system to housing and getting a driver’s license, he’s putting what he learns at The ILC to good use. James says The ILC has been, “a good experience for me, that makes my life.”
