Meet Zamy, from Cape Verde. She has overcome many hurdles during her 10 years in the United States, but her future is looking up since becoming a U.S. citizen in April. With the support she’s getting at The ILC, she even said her mental health is improving.

The ILC teacher, Rachel Spilecki, went with Zamy to the citizenship ceremony at the JFK Presidential Library.

According to Zamy, “When you’re a citizen, you stay here. You have a power and it’s more opportunity.”

One important opportunity Zamy now has is the ability to petition for her mother to come to the U.S. As a single mother herself with two children with special needs, the extra support her mother can provide will be crucial while she pursues her dream of becoming a nurse.

Zamy’s next goal is to improve her English, and she’s at the right place. At The ILC, she’s receiving the help she needs. Her teacher, Rachel, said Zamy is a pleasure to have in class and, “she is interested to hear everyone’s story as she sees it as a learning experience.”

We are extremely proud of and excited for Zamy and her family’s future. Her current progress toward learning English is made possible by supporters like you.

Thanks for your ongoing support,

Diane Portnoy
